Neighbourhood Guide: Coogee

Coogee is a beloved eastern beachside suburb famous for its family-friendly beach, crystal-clear rock pools and spectacular coastal walk. Less intense than Bondi but just as beautiful, Coogee blends laid-back beach town vibes with great restaurants, lively pubs and a strong sense of community.

Dining & cafes: Coogee Bay Road is the main strip and runs from the beachfront uphill, lined with cafes, pubs, casual eats and Italian, Japanese and Mexican restaurants. The beachfront itself has a mix of fish-and-chips takeaways, ice-cream shops and brunch favourites. Arden Street and Brook Street are home to acclaimed wine bars, bistros and specialty coffee spots. The Coogee Pavilion, a multi-level venue with restaurants, bars and rooftop, is a local institution.

Transport & access: Coogee is served by frequent bus routes to the CBD – the 372, 373 and 374 reach Central Station in around 25 to 30 minutes. The 353 connects to Bondi Junction for shopping and the T4 train line. The L3 light rail at Randwick (a short bus or drive) offers another fast city connection. By car, Anzac Parade and Alison Road provide direct links to the city and east.

Attractions & things to do: Coogee Beach is the main attraction – a protected swimming bay with two ocean pools (Wylie’s Baths and McIver’s Ladies’ Baths, one of Australia’s oldest women-only pools). The Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk is world-famous, passing Waverley Cemetery, Bronte and Tamarama. Dolphin’s Point and Giles Baths offer more secluded swimming. Gordons Bay snorkelling trail is a local secret.

“The accommodation is close to Coogee Beach. Walk down the slope and cross the park. You can see part of the sea view from the balcony. But the slope at the door is very steep. If you push your luggage, you have to put it on the flat slope in time, otherwise it will slide down. The accommodation is very comfortable. The management staff handles problems in a timely manner. A very happy stay.”
