Neighbourhood Guide: Coogee

Coogee is a beloved eastern beachside suburb famous for its family-friendly beach, crystal-clear rock pools and spectacular coastal walk. Less intense than Bondi but just as beautiful, Coogee blends laid-back beach town vibes with great restaurants, lively pubs and a strong sense of community.

Dining & cafes: Coogee Bay Road is the main strip and runs from the beachfront uphill, lined with cafes, pubs, casual eats and Italian, Japanese and Mexican restaurants. The beachfront itself has a mix of fish-and-chips takeaways, ice-cream shops and brunch favourites. Arden Street and Brook Street are home to acclaimed wine bars, bistros and specialty coffee spots. The Coogee Pavilion, a multi-level venue with restaurants, bars and rooftop, is a local institution.

Transport & access: Coogee is served by frequent bus routes to the CBD – the 372, 373 and 374 reach Central Station in around 25 to 30 minutes. The 353 connects to Bondi Junction for shopping and the T4 train line. The L3 light rail at Randwick (a short bus or drive) offers another fast city connection. By car, Anzac Parade and Alison Road provide direct links to the city and east.

Attractions & things to do: Coogee Beach is the main attraction – a protected swimming bay with two ocean pools (Wylie’s Baths and McIver’s Ladies’ Baths, one of Australia’s oldest women-only pools). “Lovely apartment, a short walk from Coogee Beach. Right in the heart of cafes, shops and amenities. Very nicely decorated space, with comfortable beds and nice linen. No air con, but windows can be opened and there are a couple of fans too. A couple of things that might be useful for future guests to know - the keys have to be collected from a different address, which is an uphill walk from the apartment. If you have luggage, you might need to book a multi-stop Uber/cab. And the apartment is in a character building with steep, narrow stairs. Again, might need to consider this with luggage.”

“Superb location and great apartment. Quality beds, nice bathroom, nice kitchen, bright. Only watch out for- we had loads of luggage and there is no lift/3 flights of stairs. The entry way is not nice (smelly old carpets and steep stairs) but apartment is lovely. Lockbox is easy and close but inconvenient with all our luggage and lack of car. Those were only negatives but I would definitely stay again.”
